Crowd Mountain’s Snooper vs. Angela’s Backlinks – Comparison of Backlink Strategies

Snooper Links vs. Angela's LinksAs most of you know, I am a huge fan of Crowd Mountain.  One of the features available to members is the Snooper tool.  The Snooper tool is really neat in that it shows members exactly what sites Google thinks are most important and that you should make every effort to get backlinks from.  There is a bit more to the Snooper tool, but that’s it in a nutshell.

My main site has gained many backlinks, courtesy of the Crowd Mountain Snooper tool. But, being ever curious to know just how well it works, I embarked last month on a comparison of backlinks.

So, early last August, I invested $5 in a list of high PR forums from a woman named Angela from the Warrior Forum.  Perhaps some of you are familiar with Angela’s Backlinks.  If not, she provides subscribers with a list each month of about 30 forum sites where people can create profiles and get backlinks.  The PR for these sites range from 6 to 10.  Sounds great!  So, I decided to try it out, since $5 per month is very affordable.  I did exactly as Angela instructed for one of my sites.

As of this writing, I have completed two lists from Angela over the course of almost two months.  That seems like plenty of time to gain additional backlinks, so I fired up my Market Samurai to take a look at my backlinks.

For those who don’t know, Market Samurai will do a PR analysis of backlinks to any given site in the SEO Competition tab.  Pretty nifty!

Any wagers on how many high PR backlinks my site has gained over the past two months after following Angela’s instructions to the T?  Any one?

The answer is a BIG FAT ZERO!!!  Not a single one of the links I attempted to get actually took.

In contrast, just about every backlink this site has was from my efforts with the Crowd Mountain Snooper or on my own (before I joined Crowd Mountain).

The results of this test were quite shocking to me.  I knew that not all the backlinks I was creating would stick, but I figured some of them would.  But not a single one did a thing for my site.  That’s far too many hours of work wasted.

Then I got curious.  The sales page for Angela’s Backlinks, found on the Warrior Forum, states that she helped a friend get to the #1 spot on Google using her method.  She shares the link so I ran that link through Market Samurai.  Guess what?  Of the backlinks to that site, NOT A SINGLE ONE has ANY PR!  As in, all backlinks to this site have PR0.  As in, zero.  Wow.

The lesson here is that there really is no shortcut to getting backlinks.  Good old fashioned hard work will win out over these “get backlinks quick” strategies.  It also increased my faith in Michelle’s teachings over at Crowd Mountain.  Time for me to go log in and check out the sites found on Snooper :)

  1. Thanks for sharing this! So how does the CM method differ from the 30 Min Backlinks method? Any idea? Thanks! S

    Suzanne,

Crowd Mountain and 30 Minute Backlinks are two different animals. In Crowd Mountain, Michelle teaches how to do research for potential niches, keyword research, how to properly build and optimize a website, and how to get traffic to the site. 30 Minute Backlinks is one, very specific, method of getting traffic to sites. And, no, Michelle does not teach that method in Crowd Mountain. She keeps the two completely separate.

    Does that help?

  4. OK, Angela’s Backlinks are pretty crappy, I’ll give you that. But I think you’re totally focusing on the wrong thing here – PageRank has been irrelevant for YEARS now. Google abandoned that algorithm a long time ago in their rankings, and they’ve even gone so far as to remove it from their webmaster tools recently. Don’t focus on PR – it’s purely for entertainment purposes and maybe as an “OK” way to gauge the link value of a site.

The important thing is just getting backlinks – they really don’t even need to be anchored properly anymore, and the emphasis is now the trust of the entire domain rather than on a page-by-page basis. If you got some links indexed from Angela’s methods then I’d say you got your 5 dollars worth. Pagerank is just a red herring…

I’ve never even heard of Crowd Mountain’s Snooper befere – I may have to check that out.

    Adam,

You make a good point. I probably did get my $5 worth of links from Angela’s links. But, it is far too time consuming. There are much quicker ways to get a link than the way Angela does.

As to Crowd Mountain Snooper, it is a tool that is exclusive to the Crowd Mountain membership site. You only have access to it if you are a member. Basically, it shows you what sites Google thinks are most important, either in general (not relating to a niche), or for any given niche. It is an excellent way to see what sites to get backlinks from. I hope that helps clarify.

  7. Nice Post and good point at the end about Hard work. I suppose Angelas backlinks could help get some improvement in the rankings, but she may have become a victim of her own success in that everyone spams her sites and the owners remove all suspicious looking profiles
