Yesterday I was looking for a WP theme for a new site I am creating. While searching for a new theme I came across a site that sells premium WP themes. The site, Elegant Themes, had amazing themes, and the price was, in my opinion, unbelievable. I took the plunge (i.e. I purchased a subscription).
Elegant Themes is a subscription-based site that is charging much too little for what you get. For an annual fee of $19.95 you get access to all the themes available by the site’s author. You can use any of these themes on as many sites as you own, for as long as you own them. This holds true even if you cancel your membership.
For those of you who haven’t looked at subscription sites for WP themes, I want to assure you that this is an amazing deal. The other subscription sites I looked at had monthly fees of $60 and higher. Plus, you could only use any given theme on five or less sites, and only for as long as you were a member. Waaaay too steep for my pocketbook! So, in comparison, the themes on Elegant Themes are a steal.
But, how are the themes? Amazing! The author, Nick, truly has done an incredible job of designing his themes. Most themes include multiple colors. This means you are not limited to the colors you see in the preview pages for most themes.
Truth be told, I never liked the theme on this site. Since I now had a large selection of themes at my disposal, I have given this site a facelift. The only thing I’m not crazy about is how the Home page uses graphic images next to each post. This means I need to go into each post and add an image. Not hard, but I just don’t have the time to do this right now. So, for the foreseeable future, you will simply see empty image placeholders. I can live with that.
If you are looking for new themes that will have the “Wow!” factor, I encourage you to check out the themes at Elegant Themes.

Hi Rochelle,
As a self confessed “theme junkie”, this is right up my alley. Paid the $20 just to check it out … and definitely see a few themes in there that I’ll be using.
I do agree with you on the images though … that’s been my problem in the past with news style themes … it makes it harder to write when you have to come up with a picture as well as words for each post. As such, I’ll probably use these themes on new sites only.
Thanks for bringing this side to my attention.

Todd – The author is currently creating a theme that has no pictures. Apparently, this was a request from members, and the author listened. If you read his blog you will see a sneak peak of the image-free theme.

Hi Rochelle,
Thanks for sharing the theme site. I will have to join when I get ready to start my next batch of sites.
Something I wanted to mention. When it comes to the themes that use the image next to the post on the main page, there is a great plugin that works with most themes if you don’t want take the time to resize the image or use custom fields. It’s called Get The Image.
It will pull and resize the first image used in your post for the thumbnail if you don’t define it. Saves a little bit of time.
Melissa – I had never heard of the “Get The Image” plugin. I just downloaded it and will play around with it. Looks very promising. Thanks for sharing!

Rochelle,
This is weird but when I try to click through from your link to their site and click the sign-up link, I just get taken to my Paypal account and not a subscription creation page.
Am I missing something?
Jeff
Jeff,
That is where you are supposed to go. Elegant Themes uses PayPal to handle their subscriptions. This is actually nice because you can easily cancel the subscription at any time through your PayPal account. So, all is well with where you ended up.
Rochelle
Jeff,
To clarify further, the subscription occurs automatically without you having to do anything. If you do not cancel then each year, on your subscription date, you will automatically be charged for another year with Elegant Themes. I hope this helps.
Rochelle
Jeff,
Oh! I just walked through the process and see what you mean. (And no need to worry, I KNOW you aren’t dumb as a rock!)
I just submitted an email to the owner about this and will let you know what I find out.
Rochelle
Rochelle,
Have you run into any problems with using these themes for Crowd Mountain sites? like plugins not working right when trying to implement Michelle’s methods?
Thanks.
Julie
Hi Julie,
To be honest, I’ve only tried one or two her her themes. But, no, I haven’t had any problems with the few I’ve tried. I actually prefer the ones from Elegant Themes.
Thank you for these tips, you read a lot of contradictions on this subject.
