Four Weeks After the Flood

I’ve gotten some email asking if I’m doing ok since I haven’t posted a flood update in a while. I’m ok. Somewhat overwhelmed at times, tired more often than not, but ok.

Here is a video of how our house looks right now:

As you can see, the drywall has been removed. Next our house will be sprayed with a mold killer. After that we will have the air quality tested to make sure all the mold is killed. Then the new drywall can be put in.

While all that is going on we are choosing new cabinetry, carpet, tile, and paint. So far we have only looked at cabinets and I was overwhelmed doing that. Too many choices!

Since we are having to do all these things we have also decided to do a little remodeling. Remove a wall here. Add lots of electrical outlets there. Those kind of things. We would have never done this had the house not flooded, but since it is already a mess we figure, why not?

(For those keeping track of this stuff, you may notice that I am now taking video again. Last week I replaced my Sanyo camcorder, the one I’d had for only three weeks before it succumbed to Fay, with a Sony camcorder. I love it!)

In additional to all the house stuff we are now back to normal every day stuff. The girls are in school (though it takes 45 minutes to get them there, instead of less than five from our house), Ned is back to work, and I am back to my new job.

All our wonderful relatives, the moms, dad, and brother who came out to help us, have all left, so we are on our own again. It was so nice having them around and we miss them.

One of the many things that they did for us was made sure we had meals to eat. Whether it was from a local fast food place or a home cooked meal, they took care of us while we took care of the house. I’m not the best cook, so this was a HUGE help.

Yesterday I bought a new slow cooker (to replace the two that died in the flood) and am now using that to make sure we still have meals to eat. I forgot how much I love slow cookers!

Fortunately for me, I wasn’t one of the people banned by EPN. I haven’t done a thing with my niche stores since the flood, but my sites are still bringing in what they have been for the past six months or so. I’m very glad to have that income coming in right now.

I am still very busy with all the things I need to do (plus I’m going out-of-town this weekend to see one of my closest friends get married) so if I don’t post it’s only because I haven’t had the time to do it.

Glad you guys are ok, and getting things back to normal. Gosh, new cabinetry, tile, carpet and paint sounds nice, and the remodeling sounds kind of fun. But I’m sure, you would have rather had the option to do it, without all that you had to go through to get it done. Glad to hear from you and thanks for the update!

    Take care! :)

  2. Wow – Looks like you get a whole new house of it all Rochelle!!

Of course, it doesn’t look like it was that old to begin with… but I think making the remodel changes is great!! I know, you hate it that something like this brought those changes on… but what the hell, look for the positives right?!

Q: How has insurance been for you during all of this? I have heard horror stories about insurance companies denying claims etc, just wanted to hear your experience.

Glad to see you posting girl!!

    Mark,

It’s really too early for me to give my thoughts on the insurance company. They did send us funds to get the process started, so that was good. As to how they are with everything else I’ll have to say when this is done (or close to being done).

I know realize that nothing is fast with an insurance company. Unfortunately, it may be even slower in my situation. The adjuster who came out to my house was here within a week of the flood, then he went to other homes in my area. He came back this past Sunday. At that time he told me that his laptop had been stolen out of his hotel room earlier that day. This means that all the work he had done over the past few weeks was gone and he would have to do it all over again. I asked if he had a backup and he didn’t.

As to our home, it is 10 years old, so we would have never done any of the things we are now doing. But, in the end, our house will be better than it was before the flood.

  5. Hi Rochelle ~ Thanks for keeping us updated. I’ve never been a flood victim … but we did lose our house to fire a couple of years ago (almost 3 actually) and what didn’t burn was lost to water damage.

I too had to learn the insurance “ropes” so if you need any pointers please contact me through my blog. I’d be happy to help in any way possible. I am so sorry this has happened and I just remember how exhausted I was sifting through what was left, sick from the environment, depressed (but trying to look “OK” and strong for my kids, and just the mental anguish overall.

I will say, I’m through it now and I believe we are a closer family because of it. I wouldn’t choose to do it over again (of course) but I will say that after the darkness there will be light again some day. Big *huGs* to you and your family! Suzanne
