How to Create a Raw-BANS Folder in Your cPanel

RochelleHow To..., Strategies

Save your self a huge amount of time by creating a Raw-BANS folder that contains your Build A Niche Store (aka BANS) folders and files. When you are ready to create a new BANS site all you will need to do is copy the contents of your Raw-BANS folder instead of uploading all these files and folders. Can you see the value yet? :-)

This brilliant idea came from Mark. If you aren’t already following his ‘Build Your Niche Store Empire in 12 Weeks‘ series then I highly recommend you do. The information he shares is invaluable to niche store builders. I am one of the fortunate ones who is participating as a guest blogger but you can follow his steps at home and ask questions as you go.

I use HostGator for my host so the images below are from them. If you use a different host then what you see may vary from my images.

My instructions to create a Raw-BANS folder in your cPanel:

Step One

Log in to your hosting site’s cPanel (i.e. your account with HostGator).

Click the ‘File Manager‘ icon or link:

Clicking ‘File Manager’ will open a new window or tab. You will now be in your cPanel’s file management area.
Step Two

Click on the ‘public_html‘ FOLDER icon, not link (this is only if you aren’t already in your site’s ‘public_html’ folder):

You will now be in the ‘public_html’ folder, which is where all your site’s domains (including addon domains and subdomains) and public files are located.
Step Three
Click the ‘Create New Folder‘ LINK:

On the right side of your file manager you will now see a place to enter a name for your new folder. Name it something like, "Raw-BANS" (I named mine "01-Raw-BANS" just so it would be the first file and I don’t have to scroll through all my other ones to find it)
Step Four

Use your favorite FTP program to upload the contents of each BANS country file to the ‘Raw-BANS‘ folder.

After you have done this the contents of your ‘Raw-BANS‘ folder will look something like this:

.

You now have a folder for each country BANS supports (don’t forget to add the new countries from the v3 update) ready to be copied whenever you want to install a new BANS site.

You can read my instructions on how to actually copy a folder at How to copy the contents of Raw-BANS for a new BANS site.

Neat. I never thought of that. Very useful, as I have some other big templates I use as well, and I could do the same with those. Thank you.

Hi Rochelle, Your instructions are clear as a bell! I just don’t read far enough! so…. my problem is… I uploaded my us store to my Raw_ Bans folder not as a folder with my us store inside, i opened the folder and transfered each folder and file for the us store individually. Should i leave as is or should i upload the whole file to the raw-bans file again? John

    John,

If I understand correctly what you did then you should be fine. But you’ll know for sure when you try to install a new store using that folder. If you are not able to install a new store using your Raw_Bans folder then upload the entire folder (you’ll need an FTP program for this) and try again.

How do you use an FTP program to upload the files in step 4?

    Steven,

You will use the same method you used to upload the BANS software to your hosting site before you created your first niche store (assuming you have BANS and have created a store).

You will need to open the FTP program you are using, navigate it to where the BANS folder you will upload is located on your computer, then upload it to your hosting site’s /public_html/ folder.

If this doesn’t answer your question please let me know.
