I’m Being Ruthless

Ruthless lemonI don’t know if it was the recent post by Mark at The Niche Store Builder (sorry, Mark, I’d put a link to the actual post but I can’t find it on your blog!) about cleaning house on your websites, if I’m just sick of having too much stuff as a result of dealing with the flood last year, or simply that I’m learning what makes a good site based on what I am learning at Crowd Mountain.  Whatever the reason, today I am getting rid of sites that I no longer want.

Many of these URLs are not yet up for renewal, but I’m getting rid of them anyways because I know that I will not renew them, so why keep them?

Also, in every single case, the sites I built are, I hate to admit, thin affiliate sites.  Although I may have spent countless hours on creating the sites, I was more focused on selling items than I was on providing information.  In short, they were all horrible sites.

The only sites I am keeping are ones that provide valuable information to visitors.  If I can’t be proud of a site, then it is gone!

One of the things that Mark mentioned in his post is that having thin affiliate sites puts my valuable sites in jeopardy.  Why?  Because search engines, such as Google, can “see” all the sites that are on a hosting plan.  If I have multiple crappy sites, then the search engines will assume that ALL my sites are crappy, and devalue all of them.

Some of the sites I kept thinking I’d get back to and improve.  Then, instead, I’d start a new site.  Not very smart!  I was shocked at how many bad sites I had when I started this process earlier today.  It’s embarrassing how much time and money I spent on them.

I probably could have sold a few of the sites, but I am learning so much right now that I do not want to learn how to do that, too.  So, instead, I deleted them from my GoDaddy account and my website hosting account.

Want to know the truth?  It feels really good to be done with them!  Some I held onto for sentimental reasons (one for no better reason than it was the very first website I ever made, even though it didn’t earn me a dime in the seven + years I held on to it).  I thought it might be hard to let them go.  Turns out it wasn’t.  Ah, I feel like a weight has been removed from my shoulders.

  1. Hi, Rochelle – A good clear out can be a great boost to morale. I’m curious, though – did you try to sell the domains first?

    Margaret,

Nope, I did not try to sell them, nor do I regret not trying. I thought about it, but I know nothing about doing this and I just wanted to be done with them. Too much on my plate to add learning the ins-and-outs of selling domains that have licensed programs on them (i.e. BANS, phpBay, etc.).
