Make sure your BANS sites don’t have 404 error messages

RochelleMisc.

Yesterday I was working on one of my Build A Niche Store (BANS) sites and all was well. Today I attempted to pick up where I left off and everything looked ok until I clicked on the link I had just created I was shocked to see a 404 error message.

According to Wikipedia, “A 404 error is often returned when pages have been moved or deleted.” I know this wasn’t the case with my store. I was a bit panicked to see this and headed over to the BANS forum to see if someone there could shed some light on this.

Strangely, it seems that I am not alone. Quite a few people are having 404 error messages on stores that were working fine the previous day. Most people having this problem are hosting with Bluehost. Not me. The hosting I’m having problems with is QualityHostOnline (my HostGator stores are fine as of this writing).

There are a few workarounds that people have done that has worked for them. One worked for me, though it is less than ideal because I can’t work on my site while this workaround is in place. But it does allow for my store pages to show up when links are clicked.

I urge you to check your stores to make sure the links are working correctly. From what I can tell if one link works they will all work (with the exception of the home page, which always works with this error). If you have this problem check out this link in the BANS forum for possible workarounds: http://buildanichestore.com/members/viewtopic.php?t=13470&highlight=404+error

Thank you very much for warning us about this Rochelle. I have noticed in my Awstats that there have been tons of 404 errors on my pages. However, I have never gone into one of my stores and had it return a 404 error.

Do you know why AWstats would show these?

    Pennsylvania Lasik Eye Surgery,

Sorry, I don’t know why you would be getting 404 errors showing up in your AWstats if seems seem ok on your sites. If your traffic and sales seem ok I wouldn’t worry about it. If, however, you think your site might be affected by this you might want to search the BANS forum to see if someone else has already posted about this. If not, you can add your own post to see what other have to say.

    Pennsylvania Lasik Eye Surgery,

While driving tonight I had a thought about why you might be getting 404 errors in your AWstats. If you have changed the location of links then you will get this. Meaning, if you had a page indexed in search engines located at http://www.myurl.com/tigers and decided to move it to http://www.myurl.com/zooanimals/tigers, then people who click on the original link (the one before you changed it that is indexed) will see 404 errors.

If you have made any changes like this, or renamed URL names, then you will want to do 301 redirects for them.

Thanks for the tip Rochelle. Luckily, this hasn’t happened to me because I’m hosting on HG. A customized 404 page or redirect might help in alleviating these issues.
