You Never Know Who May Promote Your Site

I’ve set up Google Alerts for all my Build A Niche Store (aka BANS) sites and today and interesting alert came into my email box.  It taught me that you never know where site promotion will come from.

As some of you know, I created a niche store filled with tools for ghost hunters (www.toolsforghosthunters.com).  The Google Alert I got today was for a paranormal magazine.  I’m not sure if this magazine is a paper magazine that has been scanned for the Internet or is simply an Internet publication (I think it’s a paper magazine).  Regardless, on pages 32 and 33 there is an article titled, “Tools of the Trade,” which is all about tools used in ghost hunting.  On the right side there is a sidebar with sources for buying ghost hunting gear, and my site is listed.  Sadly, it is the last listing, but that’s my fault.  They listed the sites alphabetically and mine is the last because of this (lesson learned: try to start sites with letters higher up in the alphabet…).

You can see the publication at http://issuu.com/paranormalunderground/docs/july_2008_issue/33.  Click on the image to zoom in and then look at the right sidebar, at the bottom.

I have no idea how much traffic I will get because of this but I’m pretty excited to see this!  I had nothing to do with getting my link in this magazine.  One of the editors or writers found my site and decided to include it.

i gotta say, that’s some pretty creative niching right there…

my main concern would be that im too scared to go after small-but-fanatical niches such as the one you talked about, not that i hav ever tried or something..

    Hi Rochelle

How exciting! I’d love this to happen to one of my sites. Hasn’t there been some research done by Google or someone, that visitors will click the Google entries at the top and the bottom of the list more often than those in the middle? I think it is because of the white space you get around the the ads at the top and bottom of the list – makes them easier to see. So, you may actually do much better than those further up the list. Let’s hope so. It’s a fun site and I hope you do well with it.

This site holds a special place in my heart. I really like how it turned out visually.

What about small niches scares you? Fanatical niches have buyers. The funny thing about my ghost hunting tools site is I’ve gotten many purchases from it but mainly from a single item. I could probably have made a site specifically for this item (sorry, not gonna share what it is) and do just as well as I am now.

Personally, I prefer small niches. There tends to be far less competition and a greater opportunity for sales. At least, that has been my experience with small vs. large niche stores.

It hadn’t occurred to me that the white space might actually benefit me here. Good job on putting a positive spin on this :)

  6. Lol! That is brilliant Rochelle.

It is funny indeed how our sites end up being promoted.
I have not messed with Google Alerts too much lately, been too busy with other things to really learn the system.

But this has motivated me to give it another look,
    Thanks

Great job! I’m motivated to get my own Google Alerts now. What did you put in the search term box, the actual URL of your site, or just your main keywords?

    Congrats Rochelle!
Great news. That can only help. All your hard work paid off.

  9. Rochelle ~ Congratulations! That’s exciting news. I was wondering if that link is clickable or now … I couldn’t get it to but I wasn’t sure if that was the way the publication had put it out or how you presented it to us. If it’s not clickable you won’t truly know how many visits you get from it. Do you typically get a lot of “direct” traffic on this site? Either way … CONGRATULATIONS and let us know how you make out from it. *hugs* Suzanne

No, the link isn’t clickable, which is partly why I think the magazine is an actual print magazine that was scanned. As to traffic, I do get direct traffic, but, as you said, I’ll never know if it came from this.

In this case I used the URL of my site. For some sites, such as my BANS Toolbar site, I use a term. It really depends what results you want to see as to what to use for a Google Alert. There is no limit, that I am aware of, for how many alerts you can create so do whatever you want.
